Desktop Listener Client Overview

Why is the installer asking me about certificates?

  • The Desktop Listener is actually running a small webserver on your computer.  The webserver responds to requests from the Forms inMotion application that is loaded in your browser and tells the scanner or the signature pad to work.  The problem is that your browser requires that the communication between itself and the Desktop Listener happen over HTTPS so that they are secure.  In order for us to behave like an HTTPS webserver, you must install a digital certificate.  We will do all the hard work of creating the certificate and installing it for you in the Desktop Listener installer, but we wanted you to know what was going on behind the scenes.

What is SSL?

What else is the Desktop Listener going to install?

  • The listener also needs permission in order to run as a webserver.  If the intended user is not going to be an administrator on the machine, this can cause problem when you run the application later.  Because of this, the installer also gives itself permission to run later and attach to the ports that we use for communication 37521 and 37522.
